Accuracy of Quarter-point Element in Modeling Crack-tip Fields
نویسنده
چکیده
Accuracy of the quarter-point and transition elements is investigated on oneand two-dimensional problems with inverse square-root singularity. It is demonstrated that most coefficients of the stiffness matrix of the quarter-point element are unbounded. However, numerical integration produces finite values of these coefficients. Influence of several parameters on the error in determining the stress intensity factor is studied. Solution accuracy can be improved using special distribution of element sizes and increasing the element integration order in the radial direction.

The extended finite element method (X-FEM) is a numerical method for modeling discontinuties, such as cracks, within the standard finite element framework. In X-FEM, special functions are added to the finite element approximation. For crack modeling in linear elasticity, appropriate functions are used for modeling discontinuties along the crack length and simulating the singularity in the crack...

We present a modi cation to the quarter-point crack tip element and employ this element in two-dimensional boundary integral fracture analysis. The standard singular element is adjusted so that the near-tip crack opening displacement satis es a known constraint: the coe cient of the term which is linear in the distance to the tip must vanish. Stress intensity factors calculated with the Displac...

متن کاملA Fourth Order Formulation of DDM for Crack Analysis in Brittle Solids
A fourth order formulation of the displacement discontinuity method (DDM) is proposed for the crack analysis of brittle solids such as rocks, glasses, concretes and ceramics. A fourth order boundary collocation scheme is used for the discretization of each boundary element (the source element). In this approach, the source boundary element is divided into five sub-elements each recognized by a ...

Numerical methods such as boundary element and finite element methods are widely used for the stress analysis in solid mechanics. This study presents boundary element method based on the displacement discontinuity formulation to solve general problems of interaction between hydraulic fracturing and discontinuities. The crack tip element and a higher order boundary displacement collocation techn...
